As an early adopter of digital photography, today Juergen is stretching the boundaries of the digital medium as manifested through his large format prints, which measure themselves not only against the subject matter, but also against the human viewer.

The impact of photographic images when viewed on large format prints transposes the viewers' relative size in relation to the subject. Large-scale photography thus changes and enhances the traditional viewing experience to be more compelling. As viewers approach from afar, the image begins to fill their field of view, involving their peripheral vision and inviting them to study detail in a more personal manner. 

As such, the sheer size and impact of large-scale color prints can be provocative, and more easily elicit emotional responses and different awareness.

Unusual Perspectives

One of the things I like best about the photographic process is that it offers the ability to capture and communicate unique viewpoints, and allows sharing of these perspectives with others. I enjoy other photographers work tremendously, and am fascinated with the myriad of different ways in which a subject can be considered. Give 10 photo enthusiasts the same assignement, the same subject even, and the results couldn't be more different!

World Trade Center Remembered

Long before being in Tower 4 on the morning of September 11 2001, I had a visual love affair with the World Trade Center. This gallery attests to the many years the twin towers have so strongly featured in my images, and these whimsical images in hindsight now lend a bittersweet tinge of rememberance at the innocence lost that day. I think these images, from better times, are a testament to the WTC and the former NYC skyline.

Nature Photography

In Landscape as well as in Nature Photography an unusual perspective has been the driving force behind my image making. Staten Island, for example, is the last place most people would expect to find natural beauty, however if one knows where to look surprisingly there are quite a few precious places that reflect Staten Island's past as a rich and diverse wetlands ecology. Fall colors in the Greenbelt can lead to spectacular reflections in the many Greenbelt ponds.

Comments on the Digital Process

Digital Photography has opened up wonderful opportunities for photo enthusiasts to connect with the history of photography itself. The modern photographic digital process and RAW workflow has more in common with Masters like Ansel Adams than one might imagine... Shooting digital images leads to treating and developing each exposure seperately, something that was not feasible with roll film. And digitally "developing" each image separately promotes the visualization and realization of what was originally intended or imagined for each shot, instead of getting a stack of "standardized" and "normalized" prints back from a lab.

Monochromes

One of my favorite quotes is "A thing is what it is only in relation to what it is not". Therefore some of my monochrome images are not simply black and white, but the use of selective toning isolates and defines certain colors. Today even fine art bw photographs and prints benefit from digital advances in inkjet printers. Whoever would have thought the rich prints and deep tonalities possible with a 7 color inkjet printer loaded with 7 individual shades of black? While duotones used to be achieved with chemical processes such as "Sepia" toning, todays digital equivalent is the inket b&w printer...
